The United States Growth

The U.S grew as a nation during the 1600's to Civil War by uniting together so they could live in a place where people could live freely . This was not a simple task though. Before the Civil War began the first permanent English settlement in the Americas was Jamestown which did not last. Before the pilgrims even arrived a Dutch ship arrived in Virginia full of slaves, which was the beginning of the problems that would emerge during the Civil war.
After the pilgrims came the Mayflower Compact was created which documented the self- government of the colonies which would soon be established to the original 13 colonies. The first major issue that occurred for the new settlers began with the French and Indian War. The war increased the cost for Britian to defend the colonies and instead of taxing British taxpayers Parliament decided to tax the colonials instead. This angered the colonies and they rejected the act because they believed they had their own right to put taxes on themselves especially sent they had no representation in Parliament. Colonist meet in Philedelphia to produce the Second Continental Congress to set defense against British parliament.
Another issue during the pre-Civil War era was the Articles of Confederation. This was the first "government" of the United States but its power was incredibly limited so it did not last because every change had to have unanimous consent. The states met to discuss the matter at the Constitutional Convention. They formed a new government which included the Senate and House of Representatives.
This did lead to a problem since the number of reps was dependent upon each states population and slave holding states wanted to count their slaves (though slaves did not have any rights) as part of the population to increase the number of reps they could have. "The Three-Fifths Compromise" was created which states that each slave counted as 3/5th of a person. The Constitution also limited the import of slaves. Slave states agreed to this because since their were no more imports their slaves immediately became more valuable. The Missouri Compromise tried to deal with slavery through compromise but it ultimately slowly began dividing the nation free vs. slave states. As more land was purchased Congress had to continually deal with slave-free state balance. Opponents of slavery form the Republican Party. The supreme court came to a conclusion that congress had no right to regulate the spread of slavery anywhere which lead to congress not able to settle any issue of slavery of any kind. Though the US continually tried to stay united through compromise it did not last and the North and South split beginning the Civil War.
