Smoke Signals Essay

Image
Every persons past history makes up apart of who they are. Who your ancestors are and what they did impact your life somehow, such as moving to the country where you grew up, religion, or cultural influences, etc. In the movie Smoke Signals  both Victor and Thomas are influenced by their Native American past. Victor strives to follow in the path of the Indian warrior while Thomas plays more of the Storyteller role. These cultural ancestry footprints they walk in are not only apart of their history going centuries back, but have become stereotypes that they are striving to follow as well. Society's mark on who they should be transforms how they see themselves losing all meaning of who they are. They are following a trail that has 2 different direction society vs. history. Victor conformity to society takes away the meaning of what it is to be an Indian. He doesn't look on his tribes  or the forefathers meaning but what people who aren't even indian say they have

Native American Influence

Wes Stud i  Wesley "Wes" Studi is a Native American (Cherokee) Actor who has expressed his native culture through film. His amazing portals of his characters has changed the modern stereotypes society has placed on Native Americans. His most known performances are his roles in "Dancing with Wolves", "The last of the Mohicans", "Geronimo", "Heat", and "Avatar". Until he was five he only spoke his native Cherokee language. He attended the Chicolo Indian Boarding School in Northern Oklahoma, but unlike many Native American students he never forget his language. After his time in the U.S military he became very politically involved with Native American issues, such as joining the AIM (American Indian Movement) and participated in the Trail of Broken Treaties and Bureau Of Indian Affairs protests. Wes soon moved towards looking for a positive way of change besides through protesting. He then helped publish the Cher

Newspapers of the Life out West

Image
The murderer   The Dallas Daily Herald was sent out everyday to the citizens of Dallas. Majority of the document focuses on local issues rather than national news. Apparently, it was a very dramatic town. In one issue their was a gun fight between a barkeeper and a porter because one called the other one a liar. On the same day a young man named Pat shot himself in the head and "blew his brains out" because of conflict with his brother. The largest story of the paper was about a man named, Herald Offick (sketch shown above) who was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering his step-mother. In the issue the newspaper printed a statement he had written to be published so the world could hear what he had to say. Until death he proclaimed he was innocent. When he was sentenced he said, "You may hang me, but you will hang the wrong man." After this extravagant news the newspaper continued saying that the weather was spring like and farmers should continue working

Human Trafficking research

What problem did you learn about? what are the factors causing this problem? - 25000 Southeastern europeans are victims to trafficking - in violent rural areas where alcoholism and high unemployment where people are more vulnerable to trafficking -offered "jobs" (boutique) then sold -promises escaping their poverty stricken country to work as waitresses, receptionist, etc. -domestic violence(cause) -some sold by families for as little as 600 euros. Consequences: -physochological consquences to victims (don't talk) -Girl who disappear overnight are sometimes promised chance to earn decent and honest living and when they return years later are shunned by the community and sometimes family (think prostitute but the girls weren't given a choice) -Gov. of moldova doesn't fully comply with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking (corruption of judicial sector, no security, victims and witenesses sometimes threatened, hearings are delayed and pros

Human Trafficking

Image
Moldova Human trafficking is a major crisis in Europe especially in Moldova. Each year around 25,000 Southeastern Europeans are victims of trafficking each year. According to the IOM 10% of those Europeans are children. Victoria, one of 55 females helped each year run by the International Organization of Migration and the Ministry of Labour, had a friend she had known since she was a child worded at a boutique in Dubai and told her that she could get a similar job. After booking the trip to Odessa through a guy her friend put her in touch with she was kidnapped. Once she arrived she was met by a german speaking woman who took Victoria's and six other girls passports away and told them that they had been sold. The girls were denied food until they agreed to meet with "clients" and were continually beaten. Victoria is one of an estimated 800,000 women sold into a life of rape and torture. Majority of men are put into forced labor on construction sites while women are

Learning History Through Film

Image
Movies can change minds. Although Hollywood cannot get everything historically accurate movies are a great way to experience history through time. Glory and 12 Years a Slave prove that movies can help develop analytical thinking towards real events, circumstances, and attitude by critical watching and researching. Both of these movies were taken from true events that the filmmakers were able to present years of history into a couple of hours. Colonel Shaw The movies were presented in different perspectives to create eye opening experiences of how blacks were treated pre-civil war based on different circumstances. Glory was told from the perspective of a white general leading the 54 th Massachusetts regime. In an interview with director Edward Zwick he was asked why he chose to have the movie told from a white officer’s point of view. He replied,” I think the choice was to try to focus on neither blacks nor whites, but on the regiment. One of the points of the story was to explo

Reflection on Paraphrase Practice

What I have learned Today: -Only use a direct quote when it adds power and style to my writing. -Always make it clear, from context, that I understand the full meaning of the quote. - Whether I quote or paraphrase, I must always be transparent about the source and how I'm using it. - If I use another author's exact  words or phrases, to any extent, I have to use quotation marks and give credit. - If I use another author's presentation of facts or ideas, but put their ideas in my own words, (paraphrase) I better have a good reason for doing so, and I MUST give credit. -Hyperlinking is so easy, there is no excuse for not being transparent about my sources. Quoting and paraphrasing is a great writing skill that can help strengthen any argument. Direct quotes are useful because it comes from a legitimate source to help prove your point. I have learned that it is very important that I fully understand what the source is saying before I use it. Its important to make this

Practicing Incorporating a Quotation

The movie Glory  was in intriguing interpretation of what black regiments faced during the Civil War. The review on cwmemroy makes a point that, " Like all historical movies  Glory  gets certain things right and certain things wrong." It did a great job expressing the sudden change both the white and African-American men experienced as they were united fighting a common enemy. Though the scene where the men refuse pay due to the Militia Act was well done it failed to show the ongoing problem of this act. This unfairness continued until July 1864 when finally all soldiers where given equal pay. Though the movie had a few chronological errors it gave an accurate experience of what the men of the black platoon experienced as part of the Union. It is very difficult to make a movie completely historically accurate because of all the details of the past and striving for good rating so people will want to see it. Despite these errors this movie did a great job of creating an experie

Paraphrase Practice

Film Review from Civil War Memories:  " The movie does a very good job of addressing the discrimination faced by the 54th Massachusetts as well as their heroic performance at Battery Wagner in July 1863.  One of the themes that the movie captures is the slow progress that Col. Robert G. Shaw experienced in learning to more closely empathize with his men as well as the gradual changes that took place among white Union soldiers as they questioned their own racial outlook in response to the battlefield prowess of black regiments like the 54th... As for problems, well, they abound throughout the movie such as the profile of the regiment, which is presented primarily as a unit of fugitive slaves. Most of the men were free blacks from Massachusetts. Other problems include the time frame for the raising and training of the regiment which began in 1863 rather than 1862 as well as the failure to acknowledge Shaw’s marriage at any point in the movie."  My Paraphrase:  Glory corr

The Price for More

Image
Throughout all of history and in todays society everything comes with a price. Whether its economically or morally nothing is for free. In 1764 the spinning jenny was invented because it could spin more thread in less the amount of time of a human being. Not only was it faster it was cheaper because people did not have to pay individual workers. After the decision was made  to industrialize spinning not long after the mechanical loom was created. From 1800- 1850 a normal 2,4000 looms increased to 24,000 looms thus replacing those made by hand, thus saving more money, time, and labor. These two inventions called for a machine that could clean the cotton faster therefore the cotton gin was created. What used to take a single person 1 pound of cotton cleaned per day increased to 50 pounds of cleaned cotton by machine. All these inventions were to save time, money, and efforts. But the picking process wasn't industrialized until the 1930's. There is around a 100 year gap betwe

Sympathy Vs. Empathy

Image
Sympathy is feelings of pity or sorrow for someone else's misfortune. It is an emotional feelings that is experienced and cannot be forced. If you have sympathy for someone you feel bad for them where you have experienced what they have gone through or not. Most actions associated with sympathy is word of affirmation and comfort. Those who have trouble sympathizing with people can open come across as unapproachable because their social interactions can seem strained. Empathy on the other hand is the intellectual identification or chivalrous expenounce of feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of others. To empathize with someone is to understand another person's condition from their perspective. It is to "Think about Feeling". You don't necessarily feel sorry for them but you understand the situation and how it does affect someone. Empathy also comes with habits or expectations. It is important for historians to empathize when studying history because they can put

The United States Growth

Image
The U.S grew as a nation during the 1600's to Civil War by uniting together so they could live in a place where people could live freely . This was not a simple task though. Before the Civil War began the first permanent English settlement in the Americas was Jamestown which did not last. Before the pilgrims even arrived a Dutch ship arrived in Virginia full of slaves, which was the beginning of the problems that would emerge during the Civil war. After the pilgrims came the Mayflower Compact was created which documented the self- government of the colonies which would soon be established to the original 13 colonies. The first major issue that occurred for the new settlers began with the French and Indian War. The war increased the cost for Britian to defend the colonies and instead of taxing British taxpayers Parliament decided to tax the colonials instead. This angered the colonies and they rejected the act because they believed they had their own right to put taxes on themselve
